Fazal Sheikh winner of the HCB Award 2005

On June 6th, after meetings at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris, the jury of the HCB Award 2005 nominated Fazal Sheikh as the winner for his companion projects on Indian women: “Moksha” and “Girl-Child”. He was presented by Fotomuseum Winterthur.

Attributed by the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson every other year, the HCB Award is a prize of 30 000 euros to stimulate a photographer’s creativity by offering him the opportunity to carry out a project that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.

Created in 1988 by Robert Delpire, it was relaunched in 2003 with the opening of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. Chris Killip (1989), Josef Koudelka (1991) and Larry Towell (2003) were the previous recipients of the Award.

The Award has been given by an international jury composed of 7 distinguished personalities in
the world of Arts:
- Robert Delpire (President of the jury)
- Martine Franck (Photographer and President of the Fondation HCB)
- Anne Samson (director ASC, communication and cultural sponsorship)
- Bernard Latarjet (President of the Parc de La Villette, Paris)
- Tereza Siza (Director of the Centro Portuguès de Fotografia, Porto)
- Anne Tucker (Curator of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas)
- Val Williams (Independent Curator, London)

Fazal Ilahi Sheikh was born in New York City in 1965. Sheikh was brought up in the United States and in Kenya, and is living in Zurich today. Since graduating from Princeton University he has worked with refugee groups from East African countries including Sudan, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Somalia.

Fazal Sheikh disseminates his work as an activist artist rather than as a photojournalist, challenging the anonymity and clichés of mass-media representations of refugees. Fazal Sheikh is the recipient of the Rencontres d’Arles Outreach Award 2003, of the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography, and of the Leica Medal of Excellence.
